Following the recent close encounter with Asteroid 2024 CK5, NASA has issued a new warning about four approaching space rocks that will pass by Earth tomorrow, February 22. Although some of these asteroids may come closer to Earth than the Moon, they are not expected to pose any danger. Asteroid 2024 CE8: Details
NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) has named the asteroid Asteroid 2024 CE8. It orbits at a speed of about 67,732 kilometers per hour, which is even faster than the space shuttles! According to the US space agency, this asteroid will come within 4.05 million kilometers of Earth tomorrow.
It is just one of four asteroids to pass Earth, along with 2024 DX, 2024 DW and 2024 DJ1. Asteroid 2024 CE8 is the largest of these, measuring about 87 feet across. That makes it almost the size of an airplane! But it’s not big enough to cause panic or potential damage. However, if it hits the ground, it can still cause some damage. In 2013, a smaller 59-foot asteroid exploded over the city of Chelyabinsk, Russia, damaging 7,000 buildings and injuring more than 1,000 people. This asteroid is almost three times the size of the Chelyabinsk asteroid!
Asteroid 2024 CE8 belongs to Apollo’s group of Near-Earth Asteroids, which are Earth-splitting space rocks with semimajor axes larger than Earth’s. These asteroids are named after the huge 1862 Apollo asteroid discovered by German astronomer Karl Reinmuth in the 1930s.
NASA has also revealed that asteroid 2024 CE8 has not passed Earth before and this is its first close approach to the planet. After today, it is not expected to approach again in the near future.
